Why I Get Nervous in Hotels

Last October {2010}, Jeremy and I went to a couples retreat. The church secretary checked us into our hotel and gave us our key and room number at the retreat when we arrived.  Jeremy put the key in his pocket and we went on our merry way.

We finally pulled into the hotel parking lot a little past mid-night.  We already had our key, so we just went straight to our room and opened the door.  Upon opening the door, we could smell smoke and see a half empty pack of cigarettes lying on the dresser.

Jeremy was sure it was nothing more than a practical joke.  I wasn't so sure...I don't know too many people that just sit around in hotel rooms smoking them up for practical jokes....  I stayed out in the hall while he went bravely into the room.

"This place is a mess!" Jeremy said.  At that point I saw the covers on the end of the bed moving.  I was frantic!  Jeremy was tired and not understanding why I was still in the hall with the door wide open.  He was already looking for the light switch and telling me to come in and shut the door.

"Jeremy, there's somebody in that bed!" was all I could whisper.  He turned around and looked and in a split second he bolted for the door!  "Get out! Get out! Get out!"  He kept saying.  The good thing is I still had not gone in; the bad thing is, he practically plowed me over trying to get himself and his suitcase out.

We went down to the front desk and told them what had happened.  We needed the right key to the right room.  To make a long...very looong story short, they had double booked our room and there were no vacancies...!!

Apparently, there had been other problems before we even arrived at the hotel.  Another couple with our church had had some issues with their bathroom and were told that they could share a bathroom with the people in the room next to them.  The people at the front desk thought that they were very nice people and would probably be willing to oblige.  For some reason, they just weren't comfortable with that arrangement....not sure why!?!  The room with the lacking bathroom was generously offered to us since our friends had refused to stay in it.  Otherwise there were no more rooms.

 SERIOUSLY!?!!!

Then it was decided: they would go up and remove the construction workers that were sleeping in our beds and let us have the room.  OK, so now where do those poor guys go and who is going to clean our room/bed sheets before we get in the bed?  Their answers: I don't know and did you want the room cleaned up first??

Uh....YEAH!

We asked for a manager.  Nope!  No manager.  He was home in bed and didn't we know what time it was!?!

By this time the front desk was surrounded by a couple of sleepy construction workers, our church secretary, Jeremy, myself, the hotel clerk's impatient boyfriend and the chick who was preparing to take the next shift.  No body knew what was going on.

So, we were eventually given our money back plus a little more so that we could go across the street and get ourselves a better room.  The construction workers returned to their beds.  The impatient boyfriend was glad when his girl friend clocked out, and the chick who was just coming in had a lot to look forward to that night.

THAT is why I get nervous in hotel rooms!!
