The Water of God's Word

This week we started taking "Baby Steps" toward a healthy life.  I decided that step #1 should be to drink as much water as possible and throw out all the soda and sugary drinks.  My children are not allowed to drink sugar water (kool-aid) or soda.  I've taught them that water is good for them and that we can't live without it.  We drink water all the time at our house, but this week, we've been trying to drink more water.  I tell them all the time that we must drink LOTS of water to cleanse our bodies of the germs and things that will contaminate it.

Tonight, for our family devotions we talked about Psalm 1:3.  The first part talks about a tree (or a Christian) that is planted by the rivers of water (the Word of God).  In Scripture, the Word of God is referred to as water several times.  Anything that is planted beside rivers of water will grow in abundance.  It will be strong.  It will produce fruit.  It will be successful.

Jeremy went on to point out that the opposite is true for a person who doesn't drink water (or delight in God's word...the Living Water).  One who doesn't delight in the Water of the Word will not be strong.  He won't produce fruit.  He won't be a happy, successful Christian.

I was excited to point all of this out to my children tonight after Jeremy had finished comparing the Word of God to water.  Just as we want to be sure that we drink water every day - and lots of it - to cleanse our bodies; we need to be sure that we are washing and cleansing ourselves spiritually with the Water of the Word.  We must clean out our bodies by drinking lots of water.  But, we must also keep the spiritual man cleaned out by reading the Word of God and delighting in His spiritual Water!

I just love the way God works everything out. What a perfect opportunity to teach the kids about God and His Word!!
