11 years ago on the 4th of July, Jeremy had come up to Illinois to see me and my family. Who am I kidding? He came to see MEEE!!
We decided to spend the 4th of July in St. Louis visiting the Arch and then, watching the fireworks above it that night. Jeremy had never been to the Arch before, (he's a southern boy) so we were going to make a day of it.
It was a hot, sticky day and there were people every where. There are always lots of people at the Arch, but especially so on the 4th of July! When it was time to go up to the top, my dad decided that he didn't have money for everyone to go, so if Jeremy wanted to go; he and I could go alone.
Strange...
As we neared the end of the line I could see the metal detector. I was ok with that. I had been through it and several others on numerous occasions. But Jeremy was getting nervous. (This was before metal detectors were the "norm".) He kept saying, "I didn't know we had to go through one of those. Oh, man, I can't go through that. I can't go through that."
Ummm, ya just walk through it...really not hard!!
But the closer we got, the more anxious he got.
Finally it was our turn. Now I was nervous! I still couldn't figure out what he was so worked up about. I was standing behind him hoping he didn't do or say something that would get us kicked out. The guard told him to empty his pockets and walk through the detector.
Jeremy was trying to say something to him without anyone hearing and he was bent over, pulling something out of the cargo pockets on his pants. I was confused.
What was the big deal!??!
Then I heard the guard saying in a very loud voice, "What are you doing, man? She ain't supposed to see this!!"
Too late! I had seen it and so had everyone else. It was a little white box from a jewelry store.
I suppose he felt there was nothing else he could do about it....
So, right there, in front of everyone in line for that metal detector, and before we even went through, Jeremy opened the box, revealed the ring and asked me to marry him. It was - different - to say the least. Maybe even a little embarrassing. The proposal...not the ring. Jeremy's exact words were, "So, will ya marry me?"
Isn't he romantic???
We have since added a wedding band and an anniversary band. |
Most ring boxes wouldn't have set the detector off, but this box had a battery operated light in it (like the kind in the jewelery stores) so that I would be able to see the ring that night when he proposed under the fire works....
Isn't he romantic???
Aww...how sweet! Sorry it didn't work out. It's the thought that counts...right? I don't remember hearing that story before.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I have been married for 10 years this past Thursday. He also proposed to me on July 4th. Congratulations and it is a really sweet story.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is the thought that counts! The important thing is that we got engaged/married! Jeremy and I actually love to tell this story. It's rather funny looking back on it. I even let him read it before I posted it to see what he thought! ; )
