Homemade Bean Burritos

These are one of our favorite things!  So easy to make, healthy, and WAY cheaper than store bought!  I made 20 bean burritos for $6.00.

You need:
  •  a pound of dry black beans
  • 1/2 pound of pinto beans
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 1 - 2 chopped jalapeno peppers
  • chopped cilantro
  • butter
  • sea salt
  • garlic
  • shredded cheese
  • 20 tortilla shells
  • zip lock freezer
Boil everything except for the cheese and tortilla shells in stock pot.

Drain water off beans once they are tender.  You don't want runny, soggy burritos.

Layer tortilla shells, beans and cheese.  Fold tortilla shells around bean mixture and cheese.
Fold ends in first and then wrap sides securily so that beans don't come out.
Put each burrito in it's own small freezer bag.

A few newly made burritos in my freezer.  All I'll have to do it take them out and heat them up!
Lay all burritos side by side so they can freeze thoroughly.
Don't stack until after they are all frozen.

Don't laugh at my fancy labels!
"B" is for Bean and "C" is for Chicken.

Hopefully you can get through the whole burrito making process without your children starving to death.  Mine nearly didn't make it.  This is my famished daughter insisting that she's "SOOOO" hungry!  lol
She wanted to eat a burrito right then. Where do these kids come up with such things???

  2. I'm going to try these too! Is there a difference on how you make the chicken ones?

  3. Yes. The Chicken Mixture is a different recipe. I can get you the recipe. =) I will have to figure it out first. I usually just whip it together.

  4. If you have a mormon canning center anywhere near you, it would be a fraction of that price. I bought 25lbs of black beans for $17 and 25lbs of pint beans for $12. Shredded cheese at Sams club is the same as block..

Thanks for the recipe, I have all the ingredients on hand!

  5. WOW! That's interesting. I don't know if I do (we just recently relocated.) But I know my mom would have that near her. I'll have to let her know about that.

  6. Yummy! I try to keep a stash of homemade burritos in the freezer too. Kids LOVE them. I often mix the beans with ground beef and a good-quality taco seasoning.

  7. I've been looking for a yummy bean burrito recipe. this looks yummy. I love the idea of freezing them individually, but do they need to thaw before you heat them?

I'm having a link party on my blog today and I'd love for you to add this idea if you have the time. Thanks for sharing, Maria

  8. I don't thaw them first. I just throw them in the microwave the way I would a store bought one. If I put them in the girls' lunches they usually thaw a bit by lunch time, and then they don't take as much time to heat up. Works either way I think.

Thanks for the ivite! I'll be right over! =D
