Jacky writes....
While most people think of Africa as being hot and dry, we are blessed to live in a part of the continent known as the “Pearl of Africa” because of its beauty. We can look outside our windows and see 3 waterfalls on a mountain just outside our town! It can get hot here, but most of the year it stays in the lower 80’s.
Philippians 4:6 has become very special in my life during my first several years of raising my children on the mission field. It says, “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Living in a country where diseases such as typhoid and malaria are common, where we have killed cobras and mambas in our yards, forces a missionary mom like myself to depend upon the Lord ultimately to take care of our children. A dear missionary wife gave me this advice, “Turn worry into prayer.” I am so glad that we have a God who listens to our prayers and keeps us in His care.

Our 5 children love living in Uganda. Since we came to Uganda when our oldest was only 9 months old, this is really all they have known. Since English is the major language here, my children only speak English. But when talking to their Ugandan friends, their English immediately switches to the African-English. Practice saying, “bird” the true African-English way. You say it, “bud”. And then they will understand you. But if you say “bird” with that “r” sound, they will have to ask you to repeat it over and over and you might end up flapping your arms to get them to understand what you are saying.
Our children have learned to enjoy the food of Uganda. Sugar cane is a favorite as they enjoy chewing off chunks of it and then spitting out the fibers. Jackfruit is also their favorite fruit. It’s a funny looking fruit that grows on the side of the tree trunk. They also have eaten termites, grasshoppers, and goat!

One day our kids were very excited because someone brought us a monkey they wanted to sell to us. His name was Happy. But my children weren’t very happy because Mama really didn’t need ANOTHER monkey to take care of around here.

What a beautiful place to live. The snakes would be quite terrifying for me though! Keep up the wonderful work of raising your precious family and spreading God's word to the people of Africa!
